Global Communications Network (GCN). Real Nice Chat Software!

Category: Let's talk

And let me tell you it's packed with features! The only features I'd say that aren't jaws friendly would be whiteboard, video conference and jabbor....where you can intergrate all of the messenger programs into one online buddy list. Other then that it's a sweet piece of software I'd like to share with you all. On GCN you can pretty much after registering make your own GCN product if you're a organization, group, or company......AND it's 100% FREE! Not sure if there's scripts for GCN for Jaws and if so I'll link the scripts on my blind/vi website. What you'd have to do is cick on Download, then unpack (or unzip) the files, then install. Renegade_Rocker was of some help testing the program, props to you pal! I'll include the website url and the url to the features page. So come on over to GCN, check it out! And tell me what you think!

Features for GCN

No problem! anytime! and I'll also add that the voicechat part of the program is very slick! and it even works great for those on a dialup connection!

Post 3 by Jess227 on Thursday, 08-Jul-2004 0:45:54

Yup, we had very little break ups of course if we did eithe we were having a bad connection day or one of us were downloading stuff. it's got group voice chat, peer to peer vc, I mean it's got it all guys....no need to download other programs for other use like one chat client for video conferencing, another for group voice chating, another for peer to peer and another for text chats and group chats. And it's frickin free! In my opinion Skype's nice but I'd rather have software that combines all these useful features and it even has a way to block peeps on GCN if they bother you.

Post 4 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Thursday, 08-Jul-2004 0:51:11

Well there ya have it! and just how many programs have that many features and are free? not too many at all!

Post 5 by Jess227 on Thursday, 08-Jul-2004 0:54:59

you're right Renegade.....not too many programs let you have as many people in a chat of any kind. Skype is 1 on 1, Ventrilo only lets you house 8 for free, the rest are for companies, most of the text chats I know of are all java embeded.

Post 6 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 10-Oct-2004 2:15:48

Also with gcn, there's no need to put in any server addresses like you do with ventrilo, and there arn't any segrigated servers like there are for ventrilo, you simply register with a user name once you've installed the program, then you can just add people to your buddy lists on gcn, and you can then ither group voicechat, or chat one on one. And again, the stability of the voicechat portion of the program is very good, I mean for god sake I was downloading a bloody album wile I was testing it, and there was very little if any buffering, now for crying out loud how many programs can do that even if you're on a slower connection? I haven't found any at all! But enough of my nonsencicle rambling, go register, you can go to http://www.angelfire.com/blues2/blindvi and register for the boards, and download the program. You can also hit up blindvi with a private message here on the zone, and she's given me the ok to have yall do that if you so choose if you have more questions. Well there you go! hope to see yall on gcn!

Post 7 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 10-Oct-2004 3:08:21

I mean how flipping simple can you get, no need to enter any server addresses, you just simply register after installing, and you're good to go!

Lol! great advertizing guys! :) Looks like I will have to try it when I'm home.

Post 9 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 10-Oct-2004 18:29:36

It's also free to set up your own brand if you so choose, because another site I'm on are thinking of using gcn for their voicechat portion of the page! Now does it get any better? the answer is hell no!

Post 10 by comanike (The Slightly Mad Aussie!) on Tuesday, 12-Oct-2004 9:46:51

guys! this sounds brilliant! I'm a dial up user and I've been looking for something like this for ages. somethign that still gives dial up users a chance. I'm going to go check it out!!!! so much is aimed at the broad band user these days and for me it's not easy getting broad band, 1. it still comes with a bit of a price tag in Australia, 2 I'm renting and never know when I might have to move again so it's not good for me to have broad band but I digress I'm going to go check out this software. even if it doesn't have scripts for jfw if there is enough support for it someone will make them somewhere.

Post 11 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Tuesday, 12-Oct-2004 11:09:06

Now that's what I love to see! the program is very accessible! If anything there is very little if any scripting needed, and the only querk I noticed was that when you send a voicechat request, you would just have to control tab over to the dialog that popps up saying that so and so has requested a voicechat with you, but the button to except it is perfectly usable!

Post 12 by Jess227 on Tuesday, 12-Oct-2004 13:48:00

It is a wonderful program. I for one cannot afford dsl, cable or broadband. And Broadbanders took the fun out of ventrilo. Yes if you have your own website, and want a fairly free chat service thats hosted on it's own server (not you having download it and run it on your own computer like ventrilo.) GCN is def. a thing to give a try. Cause I cannot afford to host a server on my computer. And with dial up the bandwidth dwindles quickly. So give GCN a try!

Post 13 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Tuesday, 12-Oct-2004 15:59:42

Well there you go! now what does that tell yall? even if you have a slower connection, you can still make your own cobrand for your organisation, and you don't run a server from your pc like ventrilo, it runs on the gcn servers, so no need to worry about lack of bandwidth, plus it's free to set up your cobrand!

Post 14 by sparkie (the hilljack) on Tuesday, 12-Oct-2004 19:24:33

I will have to give it a try when I'm back using my own computer. I'll probably have to start with dial up because right now I'm not making enough for dsl or cable.

lol current bf is brilliant couldn't ask for anyone better maybe after I've played with this programme I'll teach him how to use it as well. and even if he was here I still couldn't afford broad band localised relationships are even worse more money spent on other half roflrofl.

I still have gcn on my computer, but I don't think I've logged in in 60 days, so my user name has probably expired. Unless there are a few people I know there, I don't feel motivated to go on it right now.
There are those rotating ads that come up quite a lot, and they don't come up in a separate window, so the only way I can get rid of them is either enter on it so it will open in a separate window, minimize them to the taskbar, or close the room window and go back in. I have to read text with the jaws cursor, and I'm not sure it gets it all. I had 2 bad experiences on it, first, with that man who got all hot and bothered with the use of the word blind, then I went in a room and was promptly banned for no reason at all. I didn't do anything to get banned from the room, one minute, I was there waiting for the room host to speak, and I kept arrowing down to read anytext, one time it said, the moderator has kicked wonder, then it said, the moderator has banned wonder? there was even a question mark, like it wasn't sure why I had been banned. I haven't felt encouraged to log in on it since then.
I respect people's use of having private rooms, but it's impossible to join someone who has a private room unless you know the room name.
I'm not trying to bash a program that someone is trying to promote, I'm just stating my experiences with it. Perhaps If more people I know download it, and I have some friends to put on my online list, I might try it again.
I tried the peer to peer voice chat, not the room voice, so I don't know if it would work, but in the peer to peer chat, where you call someone, I could hear him very well, but I broke up on his end very badly, and when i pressed the spacebar to talk, I could even hear a putt putt sound, like a motorboat. You'd have thought my computer was underwater.
Well, that's it, better end this before my space runs out. Have a nice day all,

If you had trouble opening the zipped archive for blind/vi communications, might I suggest winzip, you can get it from www.jfwlite.com I believe. Once you've installed the program, it's as simple as extracting all files in the zipped folder called gcn setup, that is if you've created a folder by that name on your harddrive, if that's the case, go ahead and unzip all files to that directory, then go into the gcn setup directory, and run the setup.exe program to install the cobrand, easy as pie!

Post 21 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Friday, 22-Oct-2004 15:51:15

Well I was right! you can get winzip on www.jfwlite.com, and you can also get power archiver as well!

Post 22 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 22-Oct-2004 19:44:23

well I have winzip, which came up, but winzip said it didn't seem to be a valid archive, and something else I couldn't understand. I just went ahead to the gcn home page, and downloaded it straight from there, and it downloaded no problem that way.
Thanks anway,
wonderwoman

Post 23 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Friday, 22-Oct-2004 20:19:02

Aah! then there are also two other programs you could try from jfwlite, there's power archiver, and there's also winrar. That might be another possibility, it may be a .rar extention at the end of that folder, but alternatively power archiver does alot better at recognising different zipped formats unlike winzip. Hope that helps!

Post 24 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Saturday, 23-Oct-2004 21:38:20

well, as I said, I already downloaded it directly from the website, so no need to uninstall it and reinstall it with another zip program. Thanks anyway, have a good evening.
Have a nice day all,
wonderwoman

Quick update on gcn, we've got a perspective jfw scripter who's gonna be working on scripting the program, so there's still hope yet, so stay tuned for more updates!

Post 26 by Jess227 on Wednesday, 05-Jan-2005 1:02:35

Don't get your hopes up there Renegade. Our script boy is starting college in a day. I do know of one other person who can do scripting and has experience. In fact this person does it for a living. And so I asked a close friend of mine to send a email or pull the person off to the side and let him know I might need his assistance as I'm not sure if we're gonna be able to rely on this one. As we all know college work will take up 99% of your time and the 1% you have has to go tords having a life so if this fails I have a back up. I love GCN I can't tell you enough how much this program is wonderful. Yeah it needs scripts and Renegade I will contact the developers on the menu quark that disapears after a few seconds after selection.

I was wonder on there, but I haven't been on it in awhile, so my user name has already probably expired. I had the annoying problem, that it kept telling me at least 3 or 4 times, sometimes even more, that my pixels setting had to be 24 by 1000 pixels, but when I go in and set it to that, jaws doesn't read as well for me. Is there anyway you can get it to stop telling you that, and let you go on about your business with it? I'm sure they mean it won't work for best performance with video, but since I'm totally blind, video doesn't mean anything to me, and when I set my pixel range, jaws doesn't read as well at all, so i have to adjust it for the lower pixel setting.
